What made professor Sandeep Desai beg on the local trains of Mumbai

professor sandeep desai Mumbai local train beggar

He is a Marine Engineer by profession and a MBA graduate. He has taught in reputed B-schools in India. But still, he begs on the crowded local trains in Mumbai, to support a noble cause. He does so to raise funds for running English medium schools for underprivileged children in far-flung areas of Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The man behind this noble cause introduces himself as Professor Sandeep Desai, founder trustee of the Shloka Missionaries.

52 year old Sandeep Desai is a common face on Mumbai’s local trains. He has been begging on the crowded local trains for more than four years to raise funds to run 4 schools. Desai always carries several paper cut-outs, talking about himself and his mission. He talks about the schools he has set up and displays those laminated newspaper articles and invites commuters to donate towards the cause of education with his popular slogan ‘Vidya daan, shrestha daan’ (Donation towards education is the greatest donation).

According to the regular commuters on the local trains of Mumbai, Desai’s cause is genuine, otherwise Desai wouldn’t have been seen on the trains everyday.

Sandeep Desai quit his corporate job to teach at management schools. Desai has taught at many reputed B-schools; S P Jain Institute of Management is one of them. But now he devotes his full time to Shloka Missionaries.

This video by NDTV describes the story of Professor Sandeep Desai :

Why this Professor begs on Mumbai trains

Initially for his mission, he approached many corporate companies for donations from their corporate social responsibility fund. But when he didn’t get any response from those companies, he decided to approach the common people. So, he chose local trains for the vast audience, who would listen to him.

Sandeep Desai’s mission is now helping to educate the children of 4 villages including Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, which is one of the most backward regions of the state. It was not possible for the parents residing in those remotest areas to send their kids to an English medium school. But Sandeep Desai has made it possible, making it a life time opportunity for those children.

After knowing about professor Desai’s selfless dedication, Bollywood actor Salman Khan supported him in this initiative to educate children.
