Surat got ‘Pink Auto Service’ with women drivers to cater women passengers in the city
Keeping in mind about women safety, Surat Municipal Corporation has recently launched Pink Auto Service with women drivers, which will cater only women passengers in the city. SMC has identified, trained and even helped these women to get loans from banks to procure their own auto rickshaws so as to earn a decent living.
We have a batch of 70 women and 15 are ready to begin work. They have license and we also helped them to get work from schools in the area. We have concentrated on girls schools and girl students for women drivers, said Gayatri Jariwala, assistant commissioner, in-charge, urban community development department, SMC.
The civic body tied up with Bank of Baroda for providing loans at 7 per cent interest to women drivers to purchase their auto rickshaws. Through this initiative, these women have become self sufficient and has enabled them to save money even after paying their monthly installment to the bank. It is expected that these 15 women would be able to earn at least Rs 18,000 per month through the pink auto service.
