Assam’s first free online career counseling NGO Xomidhan launched its mentorship program with mentors from across the globe
Xomidhan, Assam’s first free online career counseling NGO takes its next big step towards helping the youth of India’s North East with a mentorship program. Flagged off on 1st October 2016, this one-on-one mentorship program is in association with AKADEMIC, a program run by the Assam Foundation of North America (AFNA), where meritorious but economically underprivileged students from Assam are provided scholarships. Xomidhan has selected nine of those scholarship holders to flag off their first ever mentorship program.
Xomidhan was founded on 1st January 2010, by a small group of Assamese people settled away from Assam, in their earnestness to ‘give back’ to their homeland. Over the years, the group has registered over 300 volunteers from across the globe who answer student’s queries from their respective domains.
We have been career counseling students for over six years now. Today, we are over 300 subject matter experts. Strong organization and an initiative in the lines of scholarship cum mentorship has always been in our minds as the next logical step. So, when AFNA floated the idea, we were happy to collaborate, says Ankush Kuhar.
Ankush Kuhar is leading the mentorship program along with Nidarshana Saikia Das, co-founder of Xomidhan. They are being supported by Xomidhan’s core team members Nabanita Borah, Kavita Jitani as well as co-founders Manjit Nath and Amar Jyoti Saikia.
We are proud to have some brilliant domain experts from diverse disciplines who join us for this program. Not all of them have been assigned mentees as yet because we want to start small, focus on quality rather than quantity. As we progress, we hope to improve on our framework, expand and make a significant and measurable impact, says Nidarshana.
In its first edition, Xomidhan has initiated with 8 mentors who will provide focused and dedicated guidance to each mentee. The list of mentors includes, Ullas Kumar (Indian Railway Personnel Service), Satyakam Dutta (Assistant Commissioner at Income Tax Department), Ibu Sanjeeb Garg (Asst. Commissioner, Income Tax, New Delhi), Payal Agarwal (Consultant- Taxation at CII, New Delhi), Bikash Ranjan Das (Research and Development Engineer at Imagineering, Inc., Aviation & Aerospace – Japan), Kavita Jitani (Advocate and Legal Consultant, New Delhi), Bidyut Bikash Goswami (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Mathematics & Statistics, University of Victoria, Canada), Manjil Saikia (M.Sc, Mathematics, Tezpur University; Ph.D. Mathematics, University of Vienna).
These mentors will be guiding students in their respective areas of expertise such as cracking Civil Service examination, getting through different foreign universities, building a career in banking, mathematics, robotics, astrophysics, aviation and aerospace, industrial design, photojournalism or in the field of research and development.
With regards to our future initiatives, we are planning to provide Resume Writing Services as well as Psychometric Test to the students at minimal cost, mentioned Anshuman Dutta who leads PR and Marketing at Xomidhan.
Till date, Xomidhan has counseled close to 2500 students online. Xomidhan also organizes and participates in career counseling workshops in their endeavor to help students take more informed career decisions. Xomidhan’s work in the digital domain has been appreciated by the E-North East award in 2011 as well as Manthan South Asia Awards in 2014. Xomidhan was one of the finalists for the e-Assam 2015 award.
In the year 2016, Xomidhan started two new initiatives. In a unique mentorship program, Xomidhan counsellors are now providing free mentorship to six students, who have been selected out of hundreds of applicants from Assam. This program is being conducted in collaboration with the Assam Foundation of North America, USA. Smt. Nidarshana Das, Cofounder Xomidhan shared Xomidhan’s future plans and said that it plans to expand the program’s geographical reach and numbers in the coming years.
The other noteworthy initiative is the collaboration with the leading English daily – The Assam Tribune. Since December 2016, Assam Tribune is publishing its Monday special ‘Campus’ in association with Xomidhan. This is a significant step to reach out to the students who do not have Internet access. Xomidhan has also started publishing some of the archived answers via its website.
Sri Manjit Nath, Cofounder of Xomidhan says that the sole objective of Xomidhan is to reach out to maximum students and more such collaborations are encouraged with academic institution and magazines, etc. In the last year, it also started a Facebook page to engage with and update internet savvy student community.
