A lawyer donated full backpacks to 23,000 elementary school kids in Detroit
Mike Morse, a lawyer and the owner of Mike Morse Law Firm has recently donated just over $250,000 to provide 23,000 backpacks to Detroit students. As the schools have started, Mike Morse is making it sure that the kids in his community are starting off the academic year fully prepared.
I think it teaches them that there are people out there in the community that care about them, they want them to succeed and want them to win at life, said Mike Morse.
As a trial in May, Mike Morse Law Firm brought 400 backpacks for the students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Wayne Elementary School. After its success, Morse sought to grow the project to reach more students in need.
I thought, let’s do this in a bigger way. Let’s find out how many kids there are in the Detroit Public School system, K through 5 ranges. We found out there were 23,000 of them and my law firm said, let’s do this.
Each backpack containing the items like markers, erasers, crayons and notebooks cost around $20. For the massive undertaking, the Mike Morse Law Firm partnered with the Kids In Need Foundation, a nonprofit that provides students with free school supplies. The efforts of Mike Morse to provide brand new school supplies to all the students in his community, is highly commendable; otherwise many of the kids would have secondhand supplies or simply nothing at all.
