Once bullied as ‘world’s ugliest woman’, Lizzie Velasquez is now defining the beauty of life through her motivational speeches

Lizzie Velasquez has never weighed more than 29 kg and has almost zero percent body fat. This 26-year-old has Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome, which causes premature ageing, a wrinkled appearance, and decreased fat under the skin. But, Lizzie Velasquez, who was once tagged as ‘world’s ugliest woman’, has courageously hit back at bullies by becoming a motivational speaker for bullying victims across the globe.

Lizzie Velasquez hails from Austin, Texas. Despite eating every 20 minutes or so, She cannot put on any weight. When Lizzie was born, her parents were told that she might not survive. But now, Lizzie Velasquez has finished university with a communications degree and is now starting a career as a motivational speaker.

Scientists who have been studying Miss Valasquez for more than ten years believe they are closing in on the gene that causes her condition, which may one day lead to treatments and a cure. They also believe that Lizzie, the oldest person living with NPS, is now providing hope to other sufferers and helping doctors understand how people can survive well into adulthood.

At the age of 15, Lizzie discovered a video of herself on YouTube with the tag – ‘The Most Ugly Woman in the World’. But, that does not make Lizzie Velasquez to step back. Instead, it became the defining moment for her and helped Lizzie to become a motivational speaker to help other bullying victims.

It’s my face on the big screen, but it is about everyone else’s story. I hope when people see it, they can relate to it, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. When I was younger, I didn’t see that light – Lizzie Velasquez at the National Achievers Congress in Malaysia.

Lizzie Velasquez has also written two inspirational books for teenagers, Be Beautiful, Be You (2012) and Choosing Happiness (2014). A documentary film on her life – ‘A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story’ was premiered at SXSW on March 14, 2015.
