IndiGo Airlines to carry mortal remains from Delhi to the Northeastern states for free
India’s leading carrier IndiGo has taken an awe-inspiring step by deciding to carry the coffin of the people for free, from the national capital to five N-E airports. This step has been initiated by the IndiGo Airlines when Delhi police joint commissioner Robin Hibu requested all the domestic carriers for concession for carrying coffins from the national capital to the Northeastern states.
These employees get very low wages and they face great difficulty to transport human remains to their home state in North East. Unfortunately, there is no support from these sectors and we find ourselves helpless, said Mr Hibu in his letter.
There are more than 12 lakh people from the northeast are working in Delhi. It costs around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 to transport a human remain to any north-eastern destinations. Jet Airways has also extended 50 per cent concession to carry coffins from Delhi to the Northeast states.
The five N-E airports to where the service will be available are – Agartala (Tripura), Chabua (Dibrugarh, Assam), Guwahati, Imphal (Manipur) and Dimapur (Nagaland). These concessions would be given on the referral letter issued from the Delhi Police and the nodal officer for Northeast to ensure the genuineness of the case.
