The history of celebrating Friendship Day, the most beautiful day on earth
Friendship, the most beautiful relationship that ever existed on this earth. Probably, this is the reason that innumerable great personalities of all time have defined friendship in different ways and in their own words, yet the meaning remains the same, because language of friendship is one for all.
In order to continue the harmony of friendship, ‘International friendship day’ is celebrated worldwide. It was first started in South American countries and particularly in Paraguay, where the first World Friendship Day was proposed in 1958. Even though history of Friendship Day was originated in Paraguay, digital communication modes such as the Internet and mobile phones are helping to popularize the custom worldwide.
The idea of a World Friendship Day was first proposed on 20 July 1958 by Dr. Artemio Bracho during a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a town on the River Paraguay. Out of this humble meeting of friends, the World Friendship Crusade was born.
The World Friendship Crusade is a foundation that promotes friendship and fellowship among all human beings, regardless of race, colour or religion. Since then, 30 July has been faithfully celebrated as Friendship Day in Paraguay every year and eventually adopted by several other countries.
In 1998, in honour of Friendship Day, Nane Annan, wife of then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations.
But the date to celebrate friendship day is different in different countries. Some countries, including India, celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August. In Oberlin, Ohio, Friendship Day is celebrated on 8th April each year. It is considered as one of the most popular events of the world especially among youths, who dedicate this complete day to their most special friends.
Celebrating friendship is like celebrating life everyday. Time and again, world has witnessed so much of violence, betrayals that it seems somehow we have forgotten the real meaning of friendship. Let’s celebrate the most beautiful relationship on earth in such a way that it fades away all the hard feelings from our hearts and let the humanity prevail and together we build a beautiful and peaceful world.
