A doctor’s fight against female foeticide is now inspiring many others to take up the fight ahead and stop this negative social element. Dr. Ganesh Rakh, who runs Hadapsar’s Medicare Hospital in Pune, has saved over 432 girls without charging a penny from the family for delivery of a baby girl. On January 3, 2012 he kicked off this unique initiative to waive off the complete delivery charges if a girl child is born.

It’s not just me who has witnessed how relatives thronging the hospital on D-day hug each other when a boy is born and disappear when a girl is born. Even other doctors see it every day in maternity wards of hospitals. The tension on the pregnant woman for nine months is so severe and acute that you can actually see it in the fluctuations of her hemoglobin and blood pressure, said Dr. Ganesh Rakh.

Today, over 3000 doctors from the interiors of Maharashtra are taking up Dr Ganesh’s initiative. Not only this, nearly 17-18 gram Panchayats have initiated the good cause to prevent female foeticide. Various gram Panchayats hold special village meetings and invite Dr Ganesh to talk about saving the girl child.

After reading media reports about my work, I was contacted by nearly 17-18 gram Panchayats and hundreds of doctors who have not only promised to stop sex determination tests and abortions but welcome girl children by motivating families, said Dr. Ganesh Rakh.
