Anjali Ameer created history by becoming the first transgender woman to play a lead role in an Indian movie
Though there have been several laws for the rights of the transgender people, they still face discrimination in many fields. In such circumstances, when a superstar like Mammootty will be seen sharing the screen with a transgender model Anjali Ameer, it will be indeed an inspiring story tale all together.
Anjali Ameer will be seen as Mammootty’s heroine in the upcoming Malayalam movie Pernabu. The 21 year old Malayali model is the first transgender actress from the State, to act as a heroine in a mainstream Malayalam movie. Peranbu is directed by the National award winning filmmaker Ram.
It was a superb learning experience for me as a budding artist. I was literally afraid when I first saw him. But, it was very comfortable working with him since he helped me through all possible ways, said Anjali Ameer.
Anjali Ameer has come from an orthodox Muslim family. She ran away from home when she didn’t gain acceptance there. Later, her family not only accepted her identity, but now, her family is her greatest strength.
After completing my class 10th, I started trying to undergo this change. Initially, it wasn’t acceptable for my family. So, I ran away from home. I lived with the transgender communities in Coimbatore and Bengaluru in the next couple of years. It was a period of real personal struggle.
